I watched a friend of mine fail, and it broke my heart. He was easily one of the smartest individuals I knew. He possessed the kind of raw, formidable intellect that meant he just had to show up, apply his brain, and he could accomplish anything. But he didn't show up. Instead of going to class, he played video games. He slept the day and stayed up all night. He knew what he should do but could not get himself to do it.
